Malayalee’s Gulf dream

Kerala’s biggest source of  income – Gulf – is in dire straits.   Any disruption in the flow of money from  Gulf countries would be devastating to already troubled Kerala economy.  Is Kerala ready to face the the socio-economic impact of  possible global recession?  Empty roads, slowing construction activities, abandoned cars in airports, sinking islands  – here’s a New York Times article on effects of Global recession in Dubai.

With Dubai’s economy in free fall, newspapers have reported that more than 3,000 cars sit abandoned in the parking lot at the Dubai Airport, left by fleeing, debt-ridden foreigners (who could in fact be imprisoned if they failed to pay their bills). Some are said to have maxed-out credit cards inside and notes of apology taped to the windshield.

The government says the real number is much lower. But the stories contain at least a grain of truth: jobless people here lose their work visas and then must leave the country within a month. That in turn reduces spending, creates housing vacancies and lowers real estate prices, in a downward spiral that has left parts of Dubai — once hailed as the economic superpower of the Middle East — looking like a ghost town[Laid-Off Foreigners Flee as Dubai Spirals Down].

  2. Dear Sir/madam

I am a doctor in Kerala State Health Services. When I come across old aged people and patients who are often facing the problem of being alone, with no one to take care of them at the dusk of their life span, a new concept of providing them with a peaceful and productive community life creeped in to my mind. In fact, it has become an obsession and haunting me for 4-5 years. I have been seeking help from various forums and organizations to help me make this dream come true. I had named this as a Dream Project. Most of them scoffed it off as a Utopian dream or a cranky nut’s idea.

This is a new concept and not the same old idea of an old age home where our aged parents are dumped. To make it clearer this is NOT just a “Vridha Sadanam”, but much larger that. A community living for the senior citizens and of course,in addition, a happy village for the budding young generation,in the second stage of the project.

At this time when so many fraud mails are flying all over with many scam mail cheating, to which victims are aplenty, I attach my id to prove that I am a serious and responsible person with a social commitment and not  a spammer. Please also find the project as I envisage it for your perusal, suggestion, involvement and of course support to the cause I am trying to resolve single handedly.

Lastly, I plead to whoever reads this first, not to delete this as a disturbing mail. It addresses a social concern which my be relevant in each one our homes, and we malayalees are keen to take care of our elders as a traditional commitment which is alien to the western culture. Are we always able to discharge our duties to the helpless and aged parents due to our own circumstances which force us to be far away with our own life and liabilities? Once again, even if you find this idea impractical, superfluous,or unnecessary, please forward this to some one else for a serious debate.

    Sincerely,
    Dr.Sajeev Kumar.
