Recently we came across this article in New York Times(one of the most viewed articles) which listed 11 best (healthy and nutritious)food items which are easier to find but not usually end up in shopping carts. Surprisingly at least 6 out of 11 listed items are part of regular Malayalee diet. They are beets, cabbage, Swiss Chard(Cheera), cinnamon, sardines(if you are non-vegetarian) and turmeric. This is encouraging for us and it makes sense to stick to our diet and culinary style. Click here to read the full article.

  1. Beets: Think of beets as red spinach, Dr. Bowden said, because they are a rich source of folate as well as natural red pigments that may be cancer fighters.
How to eat: Fresh, raw and grated to make a salad. Heating decreases the antioxidant power.
  2. Cabbage: Loaded with nutrients like sulforaphane, a chemical said to boost cancer-fighting enzymes.
How to eat: Asian-style slaw or as a crunchy topping on burgers and sandwiches.
  3. Swiss chard: A leafy green vegetable packed with carotenoids that protect aging eyes.
How to eat it: Chop and saute in olive oil.
  4. Cinnamon: May help control blood sugar and cholesterol.
How to eat it: Sprinkle on coffee or oatmeal.[The 11 Best Foods You Aren’t Eating]
